I enjoyed this book all the way through. I read it in all the spare minutes I had. It meant nearly missing bus stops and staying up an extra half-hour each night to read another chapter. The first chapter is a master class on how to hook a reader. We get the murder with the great opening line: A dead man fell from the sky. We get the commission from Pericles to investigate the killing. There is the threat the new, not yet established, democracy in Athens is under threat. We also know that this will mean a mundane life for our hero Nicolas. You also get the other important aspect of historical crime fiction: that the detective not only investigates the crime but also the time and place.
